First day at work...
After the long break, finally schools resumed... I was posted to a girls secondary school to serve my nation... I strolled into the school compound and proceeded to where we were to sign in before morning assembly would commence. Other corpers too came in and signed. Soon the students were converging for the morning assembly. A teacher led the praise and worship assisted by the prefects. Being a Yoruba state, most of the teachers spoke Yoruba to my chagrin as I had earlier seen a notice board that stated clearly "English ONLY should be spoken in the school premises"... "Na wa o", I sighed... After the assembly, the staff and corpers had a meeting with the principal. The principal, a slim dark skinned woman who wore the straightest and most unsmiling face I had ever seen in a woman, addressed us... I wasn't exactly paying attention but along the line during her speech I caught the part were she said "I want to congratulate our batch c corpers who had just passed away"... Ha! Passed away ke? Lord Jesus... I did the cross sign, touching my forehead, shoulders and chest... This school surely has a lot of shock to offer me o... I said in my innermost mind... I then reflected on how people kept complaining about the state of education in Nigeria. How can the student even do well when the ones we are looking up to, to teach us properly aren't even teaching us the right thing. "Olorun o, it is well"... I murmured. After the address, we proceeded to pray for the vice principal who had just bought a new car... After the prayer, I thought we were done but no, one of the female teachers lunged at the car with a song. "Oluwa dara..." We had to turn back and start singing with her.
Well, we finished and proceeded to the vice principal's we finished and proceeded to the vice principals office so we will be allocated the subject and classes we were to teach office so we will be allocated the subject and classes we were to teach. We were later introduced to our Head of Department who took me and another corper to one of the offices. While introducing us to other staffs, one of the women now put in "I'm selling eggs o. Tell your corpers too o. I have plenty eggs."... I managed a forced half smile "OK ma. I will tell them"...
I got back to the staff room I would later be staying in. The women were friendly and ever smiling. I must say this though, the people of Ekiti state in my observation seem to have such love for corpers. I dont know why but they just do. And i liked it very much. i never thought i'd ever come to a state like this if not for Nysc. I'm looking forward to a thrilling experience here as well as hoping to visit the popular Ikogosi warm spring soon.
I finally settled for the day, doing nothing much really being the first day of school for the term. I kept checking my watch willing for the time to move real fast so I could go home as soon as it was closing time. I stood up as soon as my watch clocked 2pm, greeted the teachers carried my bag, signed out at the vice principal's office and viola! I was headed home...
